Question for TECH/VIDEO Dudes

Here's the deal:

During our Sunday morning taping (which I edit for KTRE,) no audio went to the DV recorder. I figured this was going to happen, so I asked our sound guy to record the whole service (to cassette!)

On Monday, I get the cassette, burn a CD and rip it to mp3. I fly the silent video footage of the service into the editing program, then import the mp3 audio. Now, wouldn't it seem logical that if I was able to sync up the audio with the start of the service then it would stay in sync throughout?

I thought so.

I was wrong.

So now, I'm having to readjust the audio track for about every minute of video footage.

Why does this happen, tech guys? Is my video running at a variable speed during playback?

Now, I'm no tech guy...

But, it would seem that the weak link in the chain could be the cassette. After all, the tape speed could slow down or speed up and the cd can only record what is on the cassette. So... because the cassette wasn't digital... it also might not have been consistent.

Just my thoughts. I could be wrong. I've been wrong many many times before.

lance is too humble. or maybe he just knows more about cassette tapes than he wants to admit.

i won't go into all the nerdy techno details, but tape players/recorders are horribly inconsistent. todd, you're in for a long fight on this one.

Excellent point. I had not thought of that. (Good thing I'm not on staff as a technology director, eh?)

Thank you, Lance and Ross. This business is all about support and you've been nothing but from the get-go.

I'm almost done with the edit, but it has been a two day process. Yeah, everybody, you heard me right. We record to cassette.

The Methodist directions: Hey Todd you should come see me. Instead of driving 4 hours... just fly to New York, take a bus to Omaha, horseback to Vegas, pimp your way over to Orlando, and then jog into Dallas.
