Man’s Use of Religious-sounding Curse Words Riles Some

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — For years pastor Greg Daley has used the expression "Give me a Pentecostal break" to express supreme disgust. But lately he’s been stringing together more and more religious words in a cursing pattern that bothers some in his congregation. Secretary Rebekah Simms heard Daley burst into a youth room recently and exclaim, "What the Pentecostal-holiness is going on in here?" "He must have been really angry," she says.

A board member says he witnessed Daley use a series of church-related terms in what amounted to a sanctified blue streak. Daley had just learned that the church accountant had made a $4,950 error. "

He said, ‘That tongue-talking, Southern Pentecostal-holiness, fire-brand preachin’ scoundrel,’" says the board member. "He sounded like Yosemite Sam."

Daley often says the words so fast that people can’t keep up. At a staff meeting last Wednesday he got miffed at someone and exclaimed, "That’s a water baptizin’, two-bit, pew-warming, evangelizing lie if I’ve ever heard one," says Simms. •
