"the city of dallas is spending $21 million on a downtown homeless shelter in 2008. but it will do more than offer a place to sleep - it will also be a facility where meals are served and job training is offered. there are an estimated 5,000 homeless people living in dallas.
first baptist church of dallas, located downtown, spent $49 million on an education building in 2006. now it's 2008 and it's time to build a new worship center. but not just any worship center...one that their pastor claims will be "the finest facility in downtown dallas".
because god is honored when we have a nice building to sit in while we check our blackberry's during the sermon.
so our churches are building infrastructure.
and our city governments are taking care of the poor.
and jesus just rolled over in his grave."

hmm...yeah because I am sure FBC Dallas spends NO money on the homeless. Is that the point of the article? Just not sure I am that upset about them building a new building..churches do it all the time while providing for the poor.
It's certainly worth checking out...but you and I both know that you don't hear about churches doing that sort of thing very often.
I live in Lufkin where at least three new worship centers were built in the last 10 years. Of those 3 churches, no homeless shelters, no food pantry programs and very little in the way of helping those in need.
I'm a part of the church establishment and I know for a fact that most of us are doing a sucky job at it.
Church, am I wrong?
Jesus in his grave?......
Jesus rolled over in His grave while getting up!
I wrote a rather verbose comment, but I'mona go ahead and make it an entry on my blog later.
hey todd thx for the quote.
as for this post, i know i'm inviting criticism of my criticism, and that's fine...i excpeted it.
but when it comes down to it, there's no defense for the amount of money that churches spend on bulidings when there are real social needs not being met.
p.s. yes i know jesus is not in his grave. it is an expression.
well i am dissappointed wit that! i am flat out disgusted! sum man tryin to peddle pomp out o god!
